End of Internet Near

At least for some

FBI warns many could loose access starting on  July 9th, 2012.

On Monday April 23, 2012  e-mails from clients started flooding my inbox.  Both of them were concerned about an announcement from the FBI forecasting an Internet disruption on July 9.  And both of them wanted to know if they were safe.

I checked, and they were right. Local media, including the Albany Times Union, and national outlets, like CNET, were indeed running stories from the FBI warning of potentially large scale loss of Internet access starting on July 9, 2012.

This disruption would not, however, be due to some rampant new infection but rather because of a lingering old one. Variously known as TDSS, Alureon, TidServ and TDL4 it has been around since 2007. It is a DNS changer that re-directs infected machines Internet activity through “Special” servers before they actually get on the Internet.

Last year the FBI  found and took over these servers BUT (here is the news) they did not turn them off. They just took them over and continued to run them. They say they were afraid that just turning them off would effect millions of unsuspecting users and wanted to give them a little time to fix their machines.

That's right. They found the problem but did not think they could fix it – just kind of covered it up! Now, because it costs so much to keep these “Special” servers running, time is running out. The FBI is being forced to shut them off on  July 9th. When they do, any infected machines (that are still relying on getting through these servers to get around the Internet) are going to be hitting a dead end when they try to surf.

The good news is, most if not all of my clients are probably safe. I have been checking for and removing the infection in question for some time. The bad news is that there could be a lot of other folks who haven't the faintest idea that they are infected – including many Mac users.

If you want to make sure you are not one of them CLICK HERE before July 8th.
